Ellen Alence, DVM

Veterinarian

I was born and raised in Goldens Bridge, NY. Graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s of science in Nutritional Sciences. Spent a few years in biotech before going to University of Georgia for vet school.

I am moving back to the area after practicing in Florida for my entire career and raising my two children (son and a daughter) there. Both are off to college this year.

I have two dogs (Patchi, my Belgian malinois and Luxy, my chocolate lab). I also have two wobbly cats (Mr. Weebles and Mr. Wobbles).

I have two Kentucky Mountain horses (Tripp and Versace), as well as my daughter’s eventing horse Samson and retired pony Rowan. Currently 3 cows that belong to my daughter , but that number changes, lol. She breeds and shows cows.

In addition to riding horses, I am an avid mountain biker (which I hope to continue up here).

Fun facts:
I played on the UGA women’s lacrosse team while in vet school
I ran a trail marathon barefoot and won the masters women division.

After a brief sabbatical, we are happy to have Brenna back at Shoal Creek! Brenna has worked with animals her entire career but made the switch to veterinary assistant in 2020. Shoal Creek is her first and, thus far, only clinic she’s worked for, and she says we have done a wonderful job teaching her everything she knows about vet medicine. Prior to joining the SCAC team, Brenna worked as the lead trainer for UGA’s rhesus macaque colony, and though she misses her monkeys, she’s loving getting to learn so many new skills! Outside of work, her favorite pastime is lounging around with her ferrets, Labrador retriever, and husband.

Veterinary Assistant

Hi, my name is Luke, and I’m originally from Americus, Georgia. I began my college journey at the University of North Georgia before transferring to the University of Georgia, where I earned my degree in Animal Bioscience. My long-term goal is to attend veterinary school—I’m still deciding where—but my passion for animal health and care is already deeply rooted.

Growing up surrounded by animals sparked my lifelong interest in veterinary medicine. Although I have about a year and a half of clinical experience so far, I am dedicated to providing high-quality care to every patient and helping clients better understand their pet’s health and well-being. I believe that compassionate communication and thorough care go hand in hand when it comes to supporting both pets and their people.

When I’m not at the clinic, I enjoy spending time with my fiancée and our animals. I also love catching up with friends, whether that means relaxing at home, grabbing a bite to eat, or enjoying a fun activity around town.

Shelby

Receptionist

Shelby is a compassionate Veterinary Client Services Representative at Gaines Shoal Animal Clinic. With a lifelong love for pets and a natural gift for connecting with both animals and their humans, Shelby brings empathy, warmth, and reliability to everything she does. At the clinic, she’s a steady, caring presence – greeting clients, managing appointments, and guiding families through the full range of veterinary experiences. She has a deep passion for supporting pet parents through hard appointments, especially end-of-life goodbyes. In those emotional moments, Shelby finds purpose in simply being there – offering comfort, understanding, and a quiet strength when it’s needed most. Shelby’s heart is fully in every part of her work – making a difference, one fur baby at a time.

Outside of Gaines Shoal, Shelby enjoys spending time with her fiancé, MG and their two dogs, Moose and Maverick, and their cat, CJ. She also loves anything involving water and absolutely lives for Halloween. In fact, she’s getting married on Halloween this year! She also has her own pet sitting business that she has been building since before her time at the clinic. She truly loves working in her current position at Gaines Shoal and foresees herself being part of the team long term. She would love to meet you next time you’re at Gaines Shoal!

Hannah

Receptionist

Hannah has been with us at Gaines + Shoal as a customer service representative and absolutely loves greeting clients with a friendly face as they walk through the door.

If you haven’t caught her funky colored hair or eclectic personality already, you should know Hannah loves to chat with clients as if she had known them for years. She adores making the clinic feel like a home to clients both new and old and doing whatever she can to make a visit a positive experience no matter what the circumstances may be. She can often be heard cracking a joke or swooning over your beloved pet as soon as she lays eyes on them as they walk through the door.

Hannah previously worked with wildlife and shelter medicine for several years before her transition to the clinic, though she has surrounded herself with animals practically since she could walk. She originally went to SCAD for an illustration degree before finding her passion in working with animals again and moved in that direction with her career, but you will always find her working on artsy projects outside the clinic. She remains active in events in her small town such as the farmers market or teaching an art class for her community. She is even known as the “naked cat lady” by many of her neighbors due to her unusual feline friends, a hairless cat breed called sphynxes, that take walks with her around the neighborhood either in a stroller or on a leash!

In her free time, Hannah loves drawing or working whatever her new creative outlet is for the week, spending time with her fiancée and their 9 cats and 3 dogs, or she is, as she puts it, “always down for a good nap”.
